5th Beijing International Art Biennale, China 2012 Future and Reality
I was pleased to receive notice from the Beijing International Art organization Committee, that the painting “Naked Snow Blower” is selected for the 5th Beijing International Art Biennale, National Art Museum of China, China 2012. And I am honored to be among the 16 Americans whose artwork has been selected for inclusion in this exhibition. Among the many notable artists showing are: Austria's Elmar Peintner, Ecuador's Jorge Perugachy, Egypt's ESSAM DARWISH, UK's Ala Bashir, USA's Sean Scully, Larry Poons, and Paul Pfeiffer. [yes, women artists are well represented in this Biennale-- from all countries, but it is notable that the above short list doesn't contain any and still the art from women artists occupy a mere 4% of the museum walls. - statistic from the film "Who Does She Think She Is?"] A hearty congratulations to all the artists selected for the 5th Beijing Biennale.
Opening ceremony on the 28th of September 2012.
The exhibition will be completed on the 22nd of October 2012.
theme Future and Reality
Explanation:
Human dreams for a bright future forever
Possible future bases on the reality at the foot
The prospect of the future has been always the ideological bailment of the sage of antiquity, from Chinese Liyun datong, to Republic of Plato in ancient Greece, and Utopia of Thomas More in England and so on, the depiction of the future becomes an import chapter in the art history. Every period has its distinct and picturesque branding, which only belongs to itself. The gesture of moving towards to the future of modern China attracts worldwide attention, and China also needs to know the world, which is moving towards the future.
My response to this theme:
Our current reality is not desirable when you examine specific issues. But to deny their existence is to disallow the possibility of a future without them.
Datong, Utopia, and Platonic debate all target happiness of people in the absence of struggle. A society cannot impose happiness upon its citizenry. What leads to happiness is success in the face of adversity, a higher meaning beyond oneself, and passion.
My paintings portray the acceptance of our present reality absent anxiety for the future, revealed through the model's expression, although the viewer may feel discomfort. The paintings “reflect the crisis that exists now, they also promote the crisis consciousness and social culture responsibility […].” The spiritual pursuit of releasing his egoic self enables the subject to fully embrace the present and to clearly see things as they are. Only when we embrace reality can we manifest our hopes and surpass our dreams.
261 Artists from all over the world comprise this 5th Beijing Biennale.
Below is a complete list of the participating artists. Where possible, I include a link to their work. I was unable to find a personal website for all of the artists but managed to provided some link to information about them: an article, reproductions of their work, their bio. I think this task was made difficult because of the structure of the application which requested our full names and not just our professional names. In some instances, an artist's surname was listed first and in others the names were simply misspelled. I've corrected those to the best of my abilities.
HOWEVER, if you are in the know and notice that I've over-corrected...please let me know.
If you know of a better link for an artist than what I've shown...please, let me know. Likewise, for the artists without any links, if you know their websites...please, let me know.
There is a place to leave comments at the bottom of this page. They won't publish immediately as I have to approve them first. Thank you.
